What is LoRaWAN? A beginner-friendly guide to IoT

LoRaWAN explained in plain language: why sensors last 5 years on a battery, reach 2 km, and when to choose LoRaWAN over Wi-Fi.

If you're new to IoT, you've probably heard of LoRaWAN. This article briefly explains what LoRaWAN is and why it suits cold-storage and air-quality monitoring.

LoRaWAN in one sentence

LoRaWAN lets small, battery-powered sensors send data very far using very little energy.

Why not Wi-Fi?

  • Wi-Fi drains batteries — sensors need mains power or frequent battery changes
  • Wi-Fi only covers a few tens of metres and struggles through cold-room walls
  • LoRaWAN reaches 1–2 km in cities, with 3–5 year battery life

What makes up a LoRaWAN system?

  1. Sensors: measure temperature, CO₂…
  2. Gateway: receives radio signals from sensors and forwards them to the Internet
  3. Network server: decodes data and manages devices
  4. Application: dashboards and alerts

Our dev kits come with sensors pre-paired to the gateway — just power them on and you'll see data.
